New Chair – Professor Dame Betty Kershaw

We are very pleased to announce that Professor Dame Betty Kershaw has agreed to become the new Chair of the Trust. Professor Dame Betty recently retired as Professor of Nursing and Dean at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the University of Sheffield and now holds the title of Emeritus Dean. She previously held senior posts at the University of Manchester’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, the Manchester College of Nursing and Midwifery and at Stockport, Tameside and Glossop School of Nursing. She was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1998 for services to nursing and nursing education, and her consultancy experience includes work with the World Health Organisation, the International Council of Nurses, the Common-wealth Institute and the Health Committee of the House of Lords. She served as the president of the Royal College of Nursing from 1994 to 1998 and was St John Ambulance’s chief nursing and social care officer from 1998 to 2005. She is an officer of the Order of St John and previously served as a Trustee on the Nurses’ Fund for Nurses. As a Non-executive Director of the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care NHS Trust she remains in contact with clinical issues within the NHS and has special responsibility for Dignity and Quality standards around patient care. She is married with two sons and five grandchildren.
